Origin of Dr. Chelliah’s Music Ministry and The Rusty Chords Trio
Dr. Noah N. Chelliah was born into a Protestant Christian home. His father was a Protestant pastor/evangelist and served the Lord faithfully for 38 years and started several churches in India.
Having grown up in a Christian home, music always played a major role in Dr. Chelliah’s life. He began singing at the age of 7 and in spite of many obstacles such as lack of financial resources and lack of music teachers, he maintained his passion for music. So much so, he taught himself to play the Piano, Organ and Guitar. Although he will readily admit that he is no musical genius or even an accomplished musician, he enjoys playing these instruments and singing.
He also has been interested in electronics ever since he was a little boy. He often states that he really wanted to be an electrical engineer but through a series of events beyond his control… he calls “Divine intervention”…. it is indeed a fascinating story++ in itself…which hopefully he will narrate someday…he ended up in medical school… As you will find out later in this story, Dr. Chelliah’s passion for electronics was to play a major role in his music ministry.

Even in medical school he organized a Duet and a Quartet and sang for 7 years in both groups. Although he wanted to be Baritone/Bass singer like Jim Reeves, according to him, “God in his wisdom wanted to keep me humble” and gave him a thin not- so- flattering tenor voice. But he practices regularly and dedicates his voice to the glory of God. He recorded and released a CD of 10 of his favorite gospel songs in 2002 and subsequently began giving solo Gospel music concerts at the request of some of his patients.
This is where his interest in electronics came to play a major role. Dr. Chelliah being a high-end audio enthusiast (high-end audio is the term used to refer to Audio Amplifiers, Speakers, CD players and Recorders which attempt to produce the very best sound, and by implication, very expensive!) was trying to design a high quality, compact PA system.
Dr. Chelliah always felt that the PA (Public Address) systems being used by most music performers were very large and heavy and yet produced just good sound not the very best sound. About 20 years ago, he met a world famous inventor who had the perfect solution for Dr. Chelliah’s quest for the very best sound in a small package. This man was Bob Carver who had achieved international fame for having designed some of World’s very best Audio amplifiers and speakers. Bob Carver, 18 years earlier had designed the worlds’s most powerful and yet compact Audio Power Amplifier. Then 15 years ago he had succeeded in designing the World’s first super small high powered Sub-woofer which could produce 110 dB (that is loud!!) in a box that was no bigger than 11" on each side, i.e., less than 1 cubic foot. And 8 years ago he completed his design on the world’s most powerful small satellite speaker measuring just 8.25" x 5.5" x 6" that can put out 400 watts of audio. Although all of these products were designed for home theater use, Dr. Chelliah realized that these three inventions of his friend Bob Carver were just the ones that would solve his problem of designing a PA system that was very compact and yet was high powered but with super fidelity that was unmatched in the PA systems currently available. About 5 years ago, Mr. Bob Carver designed a new speaker for Dr. Chelliah called the Deceptive Acoustics DA1 which puts out 900 Watts of audio output in a speaker that is only 19" high and weighs just 20lbs! These are the ones being used today. Dr. Chelliah put together a PA system utilizing his friend Bob’s inventions which were unmatched in quality and yet was the World’s smallest and yet the most powerful. This system as designed by Dr. Chelliah utilizing his friend Bob’s inventions can produce up to 900 watts for each channel of stereo and yet can fit into the trunk of a small car such as a small Toyota or the Ford Focus!! Dr. Chelliah began to perform solo gospel music concerts around 2003/2004. In 2005, he met two talented singers in the local Grand Forks area and started a new Gospel Trio group and gave it a self deprecating name " The Rusty Chords Trio." It was through a small miracle that three individuals from three different back grounds and ethnic diversity came together to form this group.
Marilyn Lee is a talented recording gospel artist from Reynolds, ND. Wife of a farmer in Reynolds, she has been singing since she was a little girl. She has a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice that has a tremendous vocal range that she uses to the glory of God. She sings lead and harmony.
Cecil Malme, a talented professional gospel singer and recording artist is from Shelly, MN. He also has been singing since his youth and is well known in the Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the surrounding areas for more than 30 years. He has a beautiful baritone voice that he raises in praise of his Savior. He sings lead.
Noah Chelliah is a triple board-certified cardiologist who has been providing care for patients with heart disease for the last 40 years. He is the President of the Heart Institute of North Dakota a private cardiology clinic in Grand Forks that he opened in 1999 to serve patients with heart disease in the greater Grand Forks area. The Rusty Chords Trio has been singing for the last 19 years and have performed both in the US and Canada. In 2009/2010 they took time from their busy schedule to record songs for a new CD people have been asking for.
This new CD is available now. It is available for purchase from Sunday through Thursday of every week. But it will not available for sale from Sunset Friday to Sunset Saturday of any week!!
The Rusty Chords Trio sings mainly traditional old gospel hymns and newer traditional type of gospel songs but they sing in a Southern Gospel style full of reverence but with joy. They take time from their busy schedules to sing to witness to both young and old.
They have over 300 songs in their repertoire and hence every concert they perform at any one venue uses a new set of songs. They can perform at least 12 concerts without reusing a single song! So you can invite them more than once!
They wish to state the following:“We aim to praise the Lord Jesus Christ with our music ministry. We do not charge any fee for our concerts. However we will certainly accept free will offerings to defray our transportation costs although we do not require you to do so. Should you be interested in inviting us to your church or community, please contact us at the below given address or phone numbers:”
